Mauritius IBAN Structure Explained

1. Country Code — MU (2 characters)

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Mauritius. Every Mauritian IBAN begins with MU.

2. Check Digits — kk (2 digits)

Two decimal digits computed using the MOD-97 algorithm defined in ISO 7064. They catch transposition and transcription errors before the payment is transmitted.

3. Bank Code — bbbb (4 letters)

A 4-letter alphabetic code derived from the first four characters of the bank's SWIFT BIC. Examples from major Mauritian institutions:

An ISO 4217 3-letter currency code embedded directly in the IBAN BBAN. Common values are MUR (Mauritian rupee), USD, and EUR for foreign currency accounts. This field is unusual — most countries do not embed currency in the IBAN — but is a defining feature of the Mauritian format.

How Mauritian IBAN Validation Works

1. Country code check: First two characters must be exactly MU.
2. Length check: Total character count (spaces removed) must be exactly 30.
3. Character type check: Positions 5–8 must be uppercase letters (bank code); positions 9–12 and 13–27 must be digits; positions 28–30 must be uppercase letters (currency code).
4. MOD-97 check: Move the first four characters to the end, replace each letter with its numeric value (A=10, B=11 … Z=35), then compute the remainder divided by 97. A valid IBAN always produces a remainder of 1.

Common Mauritius IBAN Mistakes

Forgetting the Currency Code

The 3-letter currency suffix is part of the IBAN itself, not an optional annotation. An MUR IBAN and a USD IBAN for the same account holder are different IBANs. Omitting the currency code results in an IBAN that is only 27 characters and will fail validation.

Wrong Length — 27 or 29 Characters
