What Is a UK Sort Code?
A sort code is a 6-digit number that identifies both the bank and the specific branch where a UK account is held. It is written in three pairs separated by hyphens — for example, 20-00-00 (Barclays) or 30-00-00 (Lloyds Bank). Every UK current account and savings account has a unique combination of sort code and account number.
Sort codes are used exclusively within the UK for domestic Faster Payments and BACS transfers. For international payments — including SEPA transfers across Europe — you must provide an IBAN instead.
How to Find Your UK Sort Code
Your sort code and account number appear in several places:
- Bank statement: printed at the top or bottom of each statement page
- Debit card: some UK banks print the sort code on the back
- Online banking: visible in account details or settings
- Cheque book: the bottom row of numbers on any cheque contains sort code and account number in MICR format
UK IBAN Format Explained
A British IBAN (GB IBAN) is always 22 characters long and follows this structure:

GB — country code (United Kingdom)
kk — 2 check digits (MOD-97 algorithm)
BBBB — 4-letter bank identifier code
SSSSS— 6-digit sort code
AAAAAAAA — 8-digit account numberExample: GB29 NWBK 6016 1331 9268 19
- GB — United Kingdom

Why Do You Need an IBAN for UK Payments?
The UK joined the IBAN system under ISO 13616 long before Brexit. Even though the UK is no longer a SEPA member, UK IBANs are still required for:
- Receiving international wire transfers (SWIFT)
- Accepting payments from European SEPA countries
- Cross-border payroll and supplier payments via fintech platforms
- Multi-currency accounts (Wise, Revolut, Monzo) for holding GBP
Once you have generated your IBAN above, you can verify it with the ibanchecker.cash IBAN checker to confirm the bank name and format are correct before sharing it with a payment counterparty.
