Lithuania IBAN Format (LT) — Structure, Length & Validator

The Lithuanian IBAN is a compact 20-character format — one of the shortest in the eurozone. Lithuania adopted the euro on 1 January 2015, and its IBAN structure cleanly encodes a 5-digit bank code and an 11-digit account number. The straightforward all-numeric BBAN makes LT IBANs among the easiest to validate correctly.

Lithuanian IBAN Structure Explained

A Lithuanian IBAN has three BBAN components within its 20-character body:

1. Country Code — LT (2 characters)

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Lithuania. Every Lithuanian IBAN begins with LT.

2. Check Digits — kk (2 digits)

Two decimal digits computed via the MOD-97 algorithm. They protect against transcription errors and are fixed at account creation.

3. Bank Code — bbbbb (5 digits)

A 5-digit numeric code identifying the bank, assigned by the Bank of Lithuania (Lietuvos bankas). Common Lithuanian bank codes:

4. Account Number — cccccccccccc (11 digits)

The 11-digit account number identifying the individual account at the bank. Lithuanian account numbers are entirely numeric. If the original number has fewer than 11 digits, it is left-padded with zeros.

How Lithuanian IBAN Validation Works

1. Country code: First two characters must be LT.
2. Length: Exactly 20 characters after removing spaces.
3. Character types: All characters after LT are decimal digits — Lithuanian IBANs contain no letters in the BBAN.
4. MOD-97: Rearrange the first four characters to the end, convert letters to numbers (A=10…Z=35), compute modulo 97. Result must equal 1.

Lithuania's Euro Adoption and SEPA

Lithuania adopted the euro on 1 January 2015, the last of the three Baltic states to do so (Estonia in 2011, Latvia in 2014). All Lithuanian IBANs issued before and after the euro adoption use the same 20-character LT format. Lithuania is a full SEPA member: for SEPA Credit Transfers within the SEPA zone, the IBAN alone is sufficient. For transfers outside SEPA, the BIC/SWIFT code is required. Common Lithuanian IBAN Mistakes

Confusing LT with LU (Luxembourg)

Lithuania (LT) and Luxembourg (LU) are both 20-character IBANs with numeric-only BBANs. The country codes differ by one letter. Always verify the country code — routing a payment to an LU IBAN when an LT IBAN was intended sends money to a completely different country and bank.

Missing Leading Zeros in the Account Number

Lithuanian account numbers must be exactly 11 digits. An account stated as 1101001000 (10 digits) must be zero-padded to 01101001000 before inclusion in the IBAN.
