Complete guide to the Georgian IBAN format: 22-character structure, 2-letter bank code, BBAN breakdown, example, and banking context including TBC Bank and Bank of Georgia.

The Georgian IBAN is a 22-character code used by all licensed banks in Georgia (the South Caucasus country, not the US state). Georgia adopted the IBAN standard as part of its financial modernisation agenda and EU Association Agreement commitments. The GE BBAN is compact — a 2-letter bank code followed by a 16-digit account number — making it one of the shorter non-SEPA IBANs in the Eurasian region.

Georgian IBAN Structure Explained

A Georgian IBAN encodes four components within its 22-character body:

1. Country Code — GE (2 characters)

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Georgia. Every Georgian IBAN begins with GE.

2. Check Digits — kk (2 digits)

Two decimal digits calculated via the MOD-97 algorithm over the full BBAN. They detect single-character errors and transpositions in the account number or bank code.

3. Bank Code — bb (2 uppercase letters)

A 2-character alphabetic code identifying the bank, assigned by the National Bank of Georgia (საქართველოს ეროვნული ბანკი). Common Georgian bank codes:

  • NB — National Bank of Georgia (central bank)
  • TB — TBC Bank
  • BG — Bank of Georgia
  • LB — Liberty Bank
  • CB — Credo Bank

4. Account Number — cccccccccccccccc (16 digits)

A 16-digit numeric account number uniquely identifying the customer account within the bank. The account number contains only digits and occupies the final 16 characters of the IBAN.

How Georgian IBAN Validation Works

  1. Country code: First two characters must be GE.
  2. Length: Exactly 22 characters after removing spaces.
  3. Bank code format: Characters 5–6 must be uppercase letters (A–Z).
  4. Account number format: Characters 7–22 must be decimal digits only.
  5. MOD-97: Rearrange the first four characters to the end, convert letters to numbers (A=10…Z=35), compute modulo 97. Result must equal 1.

The ibanchecker.cash validator performs all five checks and displays the bank code and account number for any Georgian IBAN.

Georgia's Banking System

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) — გეროვნული ბანკი — is headquartered in Tbilisi and serves as the central bank, monetary authority, and prudential regulator. Georgia's banking sector is highly concentrated: the two largest banks, TBC Bank and Bank of Georgia, together account for over 70% of total banking assets.

Key commercial banks include:

  • TBC Bank — largest bank by assets, listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: TBCG), with strong digital banking and fintech subsidiaries
  • Bank of Georgia — second-largest bank, listed on the LSE (LSE: BGEO), with retail, corporate, and investment banking arms
  • Liberty Bank — government-linked bank focused on pension and social payments distribution
  • Credo Bank — specialises in microfinance and SME lending
  • ProCredit Bank Georgia — subsidiary of ProCredit Holding (Germany), focused on SMEs

SEPA Status and International Transfers

Georgia is not a SEPA member. All cross-border payments require an international SWIFT wire transfer; both the IBAN and the BIC are mandatory. Georgia has an EU Association Agreement and a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with the EU, which has accelerated payment infrastructure reforms, but formal SEPA accession had not occurred as of 2026.

The Georgian Lari (GEL) is a freely floating currency. Currency conversion charges apply to all EUR, USD, or GBP transfers to Georgian accounts.

Georgia and EU Financial Integration

Georgia signed its EU Association Agreement in 2014 and was granted EU candidate status in December 2023. As part of the DCFTA, Georgia has been aligning its financial regulations with EU standards, including the Payment Services Directive (PSD2) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) frameworks. This alignment has made Georgian banks increasingly compatible with European payment infrastructure, even without formal SEPA membership.

Common Georgian IBAN Mistakes

Confusing GE with DE (Germany)

The codes GE (Georgia) and DE (Germany) differ only in the first letter. German IBANs are 22 characters — the same as Georgian IBANs. The bank code field distinguishes them: German IBANs have an 8-digit numeric bank code (Bankleitzahl), while Georgian IBANs have a 2-letter alphabetic bank code.

Expecting a Numeric Bank Code

Georgian bank codes are two uppercase letters (TB, BG, etc.), not digits. Systems that validate BBAN characters as all-numeric will incorrectly reject valid Georgian IBANs.

Mixing Up Georgia (GE) and Germany (DE) in Routing

A GE IBAN routed via SEPA will fail because Georgia is not a SEPA participant. Always confirm the country code and use an international SWIFT transfer for Georgian beneficiaries.
