What Is a Belgian Account Number?

Belgian bank account numbers follow a strict 3-7-2 structure: three digits identifying the bank, seven digits for the account, and two national check digits — for example, 539-0075470-34. The entire number is 12 digits. The last two digits (34 in this example) are a national check number computed by the bank when the account is created.

Since the SEPA migration, all Belgian payments require an IBAN. The Belgian IBAN incorporates all 12 digits of the original account number, followed by two additional IBAN check digits calculated using the ISO 13616 MOD-97 algorithm.

Belgian IBAN Format

A Belgian IBAN is always 16 characters long — one of the shortest in Europe:

BE kk BBB AAAAAAA CC

BE — country code (Belgium)
kk — 2 IBAN check digits (MOD-97)
BBB — 3-digit bank identifier
AAAAAAA — 7-digit account number
CC — 2-digit national check digits

Example: BE68 5390 0754 7034

Two Sets of Check Digits?

Belgian IBANs contain two independent check mechanisms. The last two digits of the 12-digit account number are national check digits assigned by the bank using the Belgian MOD-97-10 algorithm applied to the 10-digit body. The two digits immediately after "BE" are the IBAN check digits computed according to the international ISO 13616 standard over the entire BBAN.

This converter calculates the IBAN check digits correctly from your existing Belgian account number (which already includes the national check digits). Once you have generated your BE IBAN, verify it with the ibanchecker.cash IBAN checker.
