How to Find Your IBAN Number — 5 Ways That Always Work
Find your IBAN number in your banking app, on your bank statement, or calculate it from your account number.
Your IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the identifier you share whenever someone needs to send you money internationally — or whenever you set up a recurring payment in Europe. Finding it is straightforward if you know where to look. This guide covers five reliable methods, plus country-specific tips for the UK and Germany.
Method 1: Check Your Banking App
The fastest way to find your IBAN is in your bank's mobile or online banking app. Nearly all modern banks display it prominently:
- Open your banking app and log in.
- Navigate to Account details, Card details, or My accounts — the exact label varies by bank.
- Your IBAN is usually listed alongside your account number and sort code (UK) or account number and BLZ (Germany).
- Most apps let you tap to copy or share the IBAN directly.
This works for virtually every European bank, including digital banks like Monzo, Revolut, N26, and Wise. If you have a Wise multi-currency account, each currency wallet has its own IBAN.
Method 2: Look at Your Bank Statement
Paper and digital statements almost always include your IBAN. Look at:
- The top of the first page of your statement (header section)
- The account summary box — usually contains account name, number, sort/BLZ code, and IBAN
- The footer of each statement page in some banks
If you have a PDF statement, search the document for “IBAN” — it almost certainly appears on the first page.
Method 3: Log Into Online Banking
Your bank's website (not just the app) typically shows full account details:
- Log into your account on your bank's website.
- Go to My Accounts and select the relevant account.
- Click Account details, Account information, or similar.
- Your IBAN, BIC/SWIFT code, and domestic account details should all appear here.
Method 4: Use a Converter Tool (UK and Germany)
If you know your domestic account details, you can calculate the IBAN yourself using a converter. This is especially useful for older bank accounts or corporate accounts where the IBAN isn't displayed automatically.
United Kingdom (Sort Code + Account Number):
UK IBANs are built from your 6-digit sort code and 8-digit account number. Use the free Sort Code to IBAN converter — enter your sort code and account number and it calculates the correct 22-character GB IBAN including valid check digits.
Germany (BLZ + Kontonummer):
German IBANs are built from the 8-digit Bankleitzahl (BLZ) and 10-digit Kontonummer. Use the BLZ to IBAN converter — it pads the account number to the required length and computes the correct check digits.
France (RIB components):
French IBANs are derived from the RIB (Relevé d'Identité Bancaire) — a bank code, counter code, account number, and RIB key. Use the French RIB to IBAN converter.
Method 5: Call or Visit Your Bank
If none of the above methods work — for example, if you have a very old account that predates online banking, or a business account with restricted online access — call your bank's customer service line or visit a branch. Have your account number ready. Your bank is always the authoritative source for your IBAN.
What If My Bank Says I Don't Have an IBAN?
Banks in countries that don't use the IBAN standard — primarily the US, Canada, Australia, China, and most of Asia — do not issue IBANs. If you have a US bank account and someone is asking for your IBAN, tell them you don't have one and provide your account number and ABA routing number instead.
Alternatively, you can open an account with a service like Wise, which provides a genuine IBAN (Belgian, typically) that you can use to receive international payments.
How to Verify an IBAN You've Been Given
Before sending a payment to an IBAN someone has provided, always validate it first. Paste it into the ibanchecker.cash validator — it checks the country code, length, and MOD-97 check digits, and tells you which bank the account is held at. This takes seconds and can prevent a costly misdirected payment.
