Monaco IBAN Format (MC) — Structure, Length & Example
Monaco IBANs are 27 characters and share the French RIB structure. Monaco is a SEPA country. Learn the MC IBAN format with bank code, branch code, and RIB key breakdown.
The Monaco IBAN is 27 characters long and shares the same structural format as the French IBAN — both derived from the French RIB (Relevé d'Identité Bancaire) format. Monaco is a SEPA country and uses the euro as its official currency under a monetary agreement with the European Union. Monégasque bank accounts are processed through the French banking system, and the country participates fully in SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Direct Debit schemes.

Monaco IBAN Structure Explained
1. Country Code — MC (2 characters)
The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for the Principality of Monaco. Every Monégasque IBAN begins with MC.
2. Check Digits — kk (2 digits)
Two decimal digits computed using the MOD-97 algorithm as defined in ISO 7064. These digits protect against common transcription and transposition errors.
3. Bank Code — bbbbb (5 digits)
A 5-digit numeric code identifying the bank. Because Monaco's banking system is integrated with France's, Monégasque bank codes follow the same numbering scheme as French bank codes. Notable institutions operating in Monaco:
- Société Générale Private Banking Monaco — One of the largest retail and private banking operations in the Principality.
- BNP Paribas Monaco — Full-service banking for residents, businesses, and private wealth clients.
- Credit Suisse (Monaco) — Private banking services for ultra-high-net-worth clients.
- Compagnie Monégasque de Banque (CMB) — The only bank headquartered and incorporated exclusively in Monaco.
- Barclays Bank Monaco — International private banking services.
4. Branch Code — ggggg (5 digits)
A 5-digit numeric code that identifies the specific branch (guichet in French). For many modern Monégasque accounts, especially private banking accounts, the branch code is set to a single central branch value.
5. Account Number — cccccccccc (11 characters, alphanumeric)
An 11-character account identifier that may contain both letters and digits. When letters are present, they are converted to their numeric equivalents using the French RIB conversion table (A,J→1; B,K,S→2; C,L,T→3; D,M,U→4; E,N,V→5; F,O,W→6; G,P,X→7; H,Q,Y→8; I,R,Z→9) before the check digit computation.
6. RIB Key — rr (2 digits)
A 2-digit domestic check key inherited from the French RIB format. It is computed using the same modulo-97 formula as French IBANs and is distinct from — but complementary to — the IBAN check digits.

How Monaco IBAN Validation Works
- Country code check: The first two characters must be
MC. - Length check: The IBAN must be exactly 27 characters after removing spaces.
- Character type check: The bank and branch codes (positions 5–14) must be decimal digits. The account number (positions 15–25) may include uppercase letters. Positions 26–27 (RIB key) must be decimal digits.
- MOD-97 check: Move the first four characters to the end, convert any letters to their numeric values (A=10 … Z=35), and divide by 97. A valid IBAN yields a remainder of 1.
Monaco Is a SEPA Country
Monaco is a SEPA member through its monetary agreement with the EU. Practical implications:
- SEPA Credit Transfers to Monégasque IBANs settle within one business day, just like intra-EU transfers.
- SEPA Direct Debit mandates are fully supported.
- The IBAN alone is sufficient for SEPA payments; no additional BIC code is required.
- Monaco uses the euro but is not an EU member state — it has a monetary agreement with the EU that grants it euro-area status.

Monaco vs. France: IBAN Similarities and Differences
Monaco and France share the same 27-character IBAN structure because both are built on the French RIB format. The key difference is the country code:
- French IBANs:
FR+ 2 check digits + 23-character BBAN - Monégasque IBANs:
MC+ 2 check digits + 23-character BBAN
A French IBAN will not route to a Monaco bank account, even if the bank codes are numerically similar. Always verify the country code before sending a payment.
Common Monaco IBAN Mistakes
Using a French IBAN Instead of MC
Given Monaco's close integration with the French banking system, it is a frequent mistake to record a Monégasque account with country code FR. Always check that the country code is MC, not FR.
Wrong Length — 26 or 28 Characters
Monaco IBANs are always 27 characters. A 27-character French IBAN and a 27-character Monégasque IBAN are both valid IBAN lengths — distinguish them by the country code, not the length.
Omitting the RIB Key in Manual Entry
Accountants copying a Monaco RIB into a payment form occasionally omit the 2-digit Clé RIB, producing a 25-character string. This is invalid — the RIB key is part of the BBAN and must be included.
