El Salvador IBAN Format (SV) — Structure, Length & Example
Complete guide to the El Salvador IBAN: 28-character format, BBAN breakdown (4-letter bank code + 20-digit account), example, and El Salvador's unique USD and Bitcoin monetary context.
The El Salvador IBAN is 28 characters long and follows the ISO 13616 standard. El Salvador adopted IBAN to align with international payment standards and facilitate cross-border wire transfers, particularly given its deeply interconnected economy with the United States — the source of most remittances. El Salvador is unusual in that it uses the US dollar (USD) as its official currency since 2001, and in 2021 also made Bitcoin legal tender. Despite these monetary arrangements, international bank-to-bank transfers still rely on the IBAN and SWIFT system. Domestic El Salvadoran payments do not use IBAN.

El Salvador IBAN Structure Explained
1. Country Code — SV (2 characters)
The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for El Salvador. Every El Salvadoran IBAN begins with SV.
2. Check Digits — kk (2 digits)
Two decimal digits computed using the MOD-97 algorithm defined in ISO 7064. They catch transposition and transcription errors before the payment instruction is transmitted.
3. Bank Code — bbbb (4 letters)
A 4-letter uppercase alphabetic code identifying the financial institution, typically derived from the first four characters of the bank's BIC/SWIFT identifier. Major El Salvadoran banks and their IBAN bank codes:
CENR— Banco Central de Reserva de El SalvadorAGRI— Banco Agrícola (Bancolombia group)DAVI— Banco Davivienda El SalvadorATLE— Banco Atlántida El SalvadorCITI— Citibank El SalvadorPRME— Banco Promerica El Salvador
4. Account Number — cccccccccccccccccccc (20 digits)
A 20-digit numeric account number, left-padded with zeros. This encodes the internal account identifier within the bank, typically incorporating a branch code and the individual account number.

How El Salvadoran IBAN Validation Works
- Country code check: First two characters must be exactly
SV. - Length check: Total character count (spaces removed) must be exactly 28.
- Character type check: Positions 5–8 must be uppercase letters (bank code); positions 9–28 must be decimal digits (account number).
- MOD-97 check: Move the first four characters to the end, replace each letter with its numeric value (A=10, B=11 … Z=35), then compute the remainder divided by 97. A valid IBAN always produces a remainder of 1.

El Salvador and IBAN: Adoption Context
El Salvador's adoption of IBAN is tied to the country's reliance on international remittances, which account for over 24% of GDP — among the highest ratios in the world. Most remittances originate from the Salvadoran diaspora in the United States. While many remittances flow through money transfer operators (Western Union, Remitly, etc.) rather than traditional bank wires, the IBAN standard enables bank-to-bank international transfers for businesses and individuals with formal banking relationships.
Notably, El Salvador's 2021 Bitcoin Law made Bitcoin legal tender alongside the USD. While the government's Chivo digital wallet was introduced as an alternative payment channel, traditional bank wires using IBAN and SWIFT remain the standard for international business payments. IBAN is not used for domestic El Salvadoran interbank transfers.
El Salvador Is Not a SEPA Country
El Salvador is not part of SEPA. All international bank-to-bank transfers use the SWIFT network:
- Processing times of 1–5 business days
- Correspondent bank fees apply
- The BIC/SWIFT code of the El Salvadoran bank is required alongside the IBAN
- Currency is US dollar (USD) — El Salvador's official currency since 2001, eliminating foreign exchange risk for USD-denominated transfers

Common El Salvadoran IBAN Mistakes
Wrong Length — Not 28 Characters
El Salvadoran IBANs are exactly 28 characters — the same as the Dominican Republic (DO) and Guatemala (GT). Always verify the character count reaches 28 after removing spaces.
Lowercase Bank Code
The 4-letter bank code must be uppercase. A system that lowercases the bank code (cenr instead of CENR) will cause the MOD-97 check to fail.
Confusing SV IBAN with US Account Numbers
Because El Salvador uses USD, some counterparts mistakenly provide a US routing number and account number instead of an El Salvadoran IBAN. US banks do not use IBAN — the SWIFT transfer to an El Salvadoran bank should use the SV IBAN, not a US ABA routing number.
